Being from New Orleans, you have to understand the idea of beat. In her photography, Julia Faia Pretus aims to feel the beat of her subject. She has a natural eye for catching fleeting moments, unscripted feelings and quick emotions. Whether it’s a fly-on-the-wall glimpse of the love between a mother and new born child, the fierce pride and song of Mardi Gras Indians, or the fast paced rhythms of a live band, Julia aims to catch the moments one tends to wish they could recall.
After growing up in New Orleans and attending college in Virginia, Julia returned to her home town. Soon after, she met and married musician and painter Jonathan Pretus. Through her on-going efforts to document as much of their life together, she fell in love with photography. Due to her husband’s profession, she was able to travel with his bands and hone her craft, capturing energetic moments on stage, and behind-the-scenes moments off.
Some of her favorite subjects to shoot are her chihuahua, Wilson, live music, families, children, parades and anything quintessential to New Orleans.
